Patricia M. Byrne

Patricia Mary Byrne (born June 1, 1925 in Cleveland , † November 23, 2007 in Washington, DC ) was an American diplomat .

life and career

Byrne was born in Cleveland on June 1, 1925 . She attended Vassar College , where she graduated. In 1947 she received a master's degree from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University .

She began her diplomatic service in 1949 and was stationed in Athens . From 1950 to 1955 she served in Saigon . She was a clerk for Laos at the State Department , followed by assignments in Turkey and Laos. In 1969, she became the first woman to graduate from National War College . Her next assignment was in Paris . In 1973 she was transferred to Sri Lanka , where she was deputy chief of the mission .

She was appointed ambassador to Mali by then President Gerald Ford in 1976 and remained so until 1979. In November 1979, she appointed President Jimmy Carter as ambassador to Burma to succeed Maurice Darrow Bean . She held this office until September 1983, when she was succeeded by Daniel Anthony O'Donohue . Ronald Reagan appointed her in 1985 as deputy permanent representative at the United Nations ( Deputy US permanent representative to the United Nations ) with the rank of ambassador. She held this office until 1989.

She retired in 1989, but later returned to the State Department and worked for several years on document release guidelines. After her retirement, Byrne lived in Washington , where she was a member of the Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired . She served on the group's education committee, which awards more than $ 200,000 in scholarships annually. Byrne was twice in the Supervisory Board ( Board elected) of the group.

She also volunteered with the Senior Living Foundation and the Asia Society . Byrne died of a cerebral haemorrhage at George Washington University Medical Center on November 23, 2007, at the age of 82 .
