Patrick Couvreur (born January 18, 1950 ) is a French pharmacologist and entrepreneur .

Life

Couvreur studied pharmacy at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Leuven , Belgium , where he received his doctorate in 1975. After a postdoctoral stay at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (1976–1977), he returned to UCL, where he worked from 1978 to 1984. In 1984 Couvreur became Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at the University of Paris-South . From 2009 to 2014 he was Membre Senior ( German  senior member ) of the Institut universitaire de France . From 2009 to 2010 he held a chair at the Collège de France .

Patrick Couvreur heads a laboratory jointly run by the University of Paris-South and the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), the Institut Galien Paris-Sud (UMR CNRS 8612) in Châtenay-Malabry .

Services

Patrick Couvreur conducts research in the field of nanomedicine , in particular drug delivery and drug release with the help of nanoparticles . Couvreur and his team of researchers at the Université Paris-Sud succeeded in developing nanocapsules that encase cancer drugs. This allows the drugs to be transported to the cancer cells in the human body, where they take effect without damaging healthy tissue as a side effect. In 1997 he founded the Bioalliance company . In 2013, the nanomedicines developed by Couvreur and his colleagues were in phase III clinical trials .

Prizes and awards (selection)

In 1996 the International Pharmaceutical Federation (IPF) named Patrick Couvreur Pharmaceutical Scientist of the Year . In 2007 the IPF awarded him the Horst Madsen Medal.

In 2013 Patrick Couvreur and his colleagues Barbara Stella, Véronique Rosilio and Luigi Cattel were awarded the European Inventor Award in the field of "Research" by the European Patent Organization for a patent registered in 2005 .
