Patrick Forrest

Sir Andrew Patrick McEwen Forrest (born March 25, 1923 in Mount Vernon , Lanarkshire ) is a British surgeon who initiated mammography programs for breast cancer screening in Great Britain .

Forrest attended the High School of Dundee in Dundee and studied at St. Andrews University (completion 1945). After two years as a surgeon in the Royal Navy (RNVR) , he continued his residency at St. Andrews, the Royal Infirmary in Dundee (where he was House Surgeon) and the Mayo Clinic (as a Mayo Foundation Fellow). He was a lecturer at the University of Glasgow (with Charles Illingworth ) and in 1962 Professor of Surgery at the Welsh National School of Medicine , before becoming Regius Professor of Surgery (Clinical Surgery) at the University of Edinburgh , where he has since retired. He was Associate Dean of Clinical Studies at the International Medical College in Malaysia and visiting scholar at the National Cancer Institute in the USA.

Forrest received his Masters of Surgery studies in the pathophysiology of gastric ulcer, which earned him a gold medal from the University of Glasgow, where he also received his PhD in surgical treatment of breast cancer. In Edinburgh, he is initiating an extensive interdisciplinary research program on breast cancer and establishing the university as one of the leading centers for breast cancer treatment and research in the UK. He founded the Breast Cancer Center at Longmore Hospital and was its chief scientist from 1981.

From 1981 to 1987 he was a senior scientist in the Scottish Home and Health Department.

In 1985 he was responsible for a report for the UK Department of Health on breast cancer screening with mammography. As a result of the Forrest Report , the National Health Service (NHS) launched a breast cancer screening program. Forrest headed this program from 1985 to 1986 (Breast Cancer Screening Working Group).

He was President of the Surgical Research Society from 1974 to 1976 and of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) from 1988/89.

In 1987 he received the Lister Medal and he was awarded the McKeown Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPE), Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE), Honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Honorary Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR), the Faculty of Public Health (FFPHM) and two honorary doctorates. In 1986 he was knighted (Knight Bachelor, Kt).

He was married twice, has a son and a daughter from his first marriage and a daughter from his second marriage.
