Patrick Gomes

Patrick Ignatius Gomes (born November 3, 1941 in Georgetown ) is a Guyanese diplomat . He has been General Secretary of the AKP Group since 2015 .

Life

Gomes studied Latin, history and philosophy (1961-1963) and canon law, theology and ethics (1964-1967) at the Roman Catholic seminary in Mount Saint Benedict , Trinidad and Tobago and was ordained a priest on August 6, 1967 in Guyana . In 1970 he received a Master of Arts in Sociology from Fordham University and in 1979 a Ph.D. -Grad ibid.

From 1974 to 1990 he worked at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine (Trinidad and Tobago). He then worked as a political advisor for the to 1992 United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Executive active, and then to 2003 Director of the Caribbean Center for Development Administration, an agency of the Caribbean Community .

In 2005 he was appointed Ambassador and represented Guyana to the European Union , the European Commission , Belgium, and the ACP Group. He was also accredited in Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria and Cyprus and represented Guyana at the World Trade Organization , the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

On December 10, 2014, he was elected Secretary General for the 2015-2020 term of office by the ACP Council of Ministers, succeeding Mohamed Ibn Chambas in this function .
