Patrick Harries

Patrick Allan Lifford Harries (born May 31, 1950 in Cape Town ; † June 2, 2016 there ) was a South African historian and university professor.

Patrick Harries studied at the University of Cape Town . In 1983 he received his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London . From 1980 to 2000 Harries was first a lecturer and from 1993 an associate professor at the University of Cape Town, during which time he also held various visiting professorships. Since 2001 he has been Associate Professor of African History at the University of Basel , where he was involved in the management of the Center for African Studies and the Competence Center for Africa. In 2015 he retired. In the same year he returned to his native Cape Town, where he died unexpectedly the following year.

Patrick Harries' research focuses in particular on the history of work and the history of knowledge systems in southern Africa.
