Patrick John Murdoch

Patrick John Murdoch (born June 10, 1850 in Pitsligo , Aberdeenshire , Scotland , † June 1, 1940 in Auburn , Victoria ) was a Scottish-Australian Presbyterian clergyman.

Life

After studying with an MA at the University of Aberdeen and the denominational New College in Edinburgh , Murdoch took over the ecclesiastical office of pastor of the Free Church of Scotland . He was ordained in 1878 . The crisis of the Free Church of Scotland in the 1880s prompted him to accept a call from the West Melbourne Presbyterian Church . He and some of his relatives moved to what was then the colony of Victoria. In 1887 he was called to Trinity Church in Camberwell , Melbourne , where he worked until 1928. From 1898 to 1899 he took over the office as chairman of the general assembly (moderator) of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria , from 1905 to 1906 he acted as moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Australia .

Murdoch wrote several theological writings. His friends included Prime Ministers Andrew Fisher , Alfred Deakin, and Robert Menzies .

Murdoch had married Annie Brown in 1882. The marriage resulted in a daughter and three sons, including Keith Murdoch , the father of Rupert Murdoch .
