Patrick Swanson

Patrick Swanson (* 1990 ) is an Austrian journalist . He works at the time the picture in the ORF and as Head of Social Media for the performances of the CIA responsible in social media. This includes the Facebook page and the Instagram presence of Zeit im Bild as well as the news program ZIB100 . Swanson also works as a journalism lecturer at the Vienna University of Applied Sciences of the WKW .

Career

Patrick Swanson attended the Landeck Commercial Academy and then studied political science at the University of Innsbruck .

In July 2013 he started an internship in the time in the picture editorial team of ORF. In this function, Swanson started building the ZIB Facebook page and developed various ORF social media formats. After the internship, he stayed at ORF and continued to work on the strategy of Zeit im Bild in the digital sector. Fact checks on the subject of asylum during the refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016 attracted particular interest.

Together with Armin Wolf , he developed the short news program ZIB100, which went online for the first time on April 25, 2016. The program is designed in portrait format and optimized for consumption on smartphones.

In 2019, Swanson was responsible for developing the ZIB presence on Instagram. This started on September 1, 2019. In May 2020, the number of ZIB subscribers on Instagram was 380,000.

Podcast: "What's that about?"

In 2017, Swanson and journalist Michael Mayrhofer started the podcast “Was soll das?” On politics and social media. In 27 issues from May to December 2017, they interviewed the data protection officer Max Schrems , the former Federal President Heinz Fischer and the journalists Corinna Milborn and Ingrid Brodnig . The podcast reached thousands of listeners per episode and is considered a trailblazer for professional podcasts in Austria.

Awards

In 2015 Swanson was named one of the best Austrian journalists under 30.

Swanson and Simone Stribl , Tobias Pötzelsberger and Matthias Westhoff were awarded the Walther Rode Prize for professional coverage of the Ibiza affair in May 2019 . According to the jury's reasoning, their work is "a sign of the professional self-image of a well-trained generation of journalists who are able to assert themselves professionally even under political and economic pressure and who live up to the mandate of quality and independence in public broadcasting."
