Paul Johann Benndorf (born March 9, 1859 in Leipzig ; † November 12, 1926 there ) was a German teacher , writer and researcher on Sepulchral .

Paul Benndorf got his first job as a teacher in 1877. Since August 1, 1883, he taught in Leipzig. There he switched to the I. Higher Citizens School in 1910. In addition to teaching, he was also interested in folklore and local history. He traveled to Norway , Greece , France and other European countries, including the Caucasus and the Middle East. He publishes several travel reports about these trips, from whose fees he financed new trips. A copy of his book "Die Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig" is in the keystone of the Leipziger Völkerschlachtdenkmal .

He earned great merit through his research into the history of Leipzig . Most of the time it was dedicated to the old Johannisfriedhof , the oldest cemetery in Leipzig. In his work “Der Alte Johannisfriedhof in Leipzig”, published in 1922, he summarized the results of his 40 years of occupation with the cemetery. He is therefore considered to be the most important Leipzig Sepulchral Researcher to date.

Benndorf died in 1926 after a brief illness and was buried on November 15, 1926 in the Leipzig South Cemetery.

On April 1st, 2008, the Paul-Benndorf-Gesellschaft zu Leipzig , a registered association for the promotion and maintenance of cultural values ​​in the field of cemeteries and monuments, was founded.

The Paul-Benndorf-Gesellschaft promotes the preservation and care of historical cemetery facilities with their monumental tombs in Leipzig with a special focus on the south cemetery. She is also active in the field of monument protection, monument preservation and stonemasonry and dedicates herself to the history of Leipzig sepulchral culture in lectures and tours .
