The Paul Greifzu Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund .

The stadium is located on Barther Strasse on the so-called Stadtkoppel. It was named after the racing driver Paul Greifzu (1905–1952). Today the stadium is best known for its speedway events. On the 385 meter long track made of rock powder and coal slag, races in the Speedway Bundesliga as well as the International Baltic Sea Cup and the Stralsund Nikolauspokal are held. In 2008 the final of the European Speedway Junior Championship took place here. The speedway facility is the home of MC Nordstern Stralsund .

There are other sports facilities on the site, such as football fields ( artificial turf ), and FC Pommern Stralsund sometimes plays its games here.

history

On February 9, 1937, Dr. In his inaugural address, Leschke announced that the construction of a stadium “should be tackled as quickly as possible”. The four possible areas owned by the city were the rinsing area on Dänholm in front of Stralsund, the former Vogelsang pond , an area on Prohner Chaussee and the area near the restaurant "Zur Stadtkoppel" on the former Stadtkoppel estate . This area, which at that time consisted of arable land, had been owned by the city since 1888. The city administration preferred the area on Prohner Chaussee, which, however, was outside the city area, in the Franzburg-Barth district . The decision was ultimately made in favor of the Stadtkoppel.

Since the cost of building a new stadium with side seats exceeded the city's financial capabilities, Werner Stoll , Lord Mayor of Stralsund, stated that “the city by no means wanted to trumpet the world that it wanted to build a huge stadium in a short time. Given the financial situation and the most urgent housing construction issues, this is not possible. On the other hand, in the interest of training young people, it is urgently necessary to start with this first. ”The aim was to build an arena with 8,000 seats and 6,000 standing places. In addition, a "military combat track" was to be created for the units of the Schutzstaffel (SS) , Sturmabteilung (SA) and the National Socialist Motor Corps (NSKK) . Work began on July 15, 1937. The area first had to be drained. The residents of Stralsund were called to volunteer help.

In the spring of 1938, the Heinrich Stein company from Stralsund received an order from the municipal building authority to build a 70 × 105 meter playing field, a 400 meter cinder track, and jumping and throwing facilities. This plant cost 50,000 Reichsmarks (RM), of which the city was only able to raise 29,000 RM. There was no government grant. On March 6, 1939, the city signed a lease agreement with SV Reichspost 07 Stralsund , which gave the association the property next to Barther Strasse to build a clubhouse. In return, the club received the exclusive right to use the practice area in front of the club house and the preferred right to use the second place.

After the beginning of the Second World War, work on the sports facility was suspended.

The construction of a speedway facility began in 1957 . Motorcycling was previously organized on a circuit through the city under the name of the “bathing race”. The route around the Knieperteich , however, was very risky for the spectators; the pool races have been stopped. For the new system, 130,000 German marks were approved by the German central bank from funds from the state lottery and VEB Bau Stralsund was commissioned with the implementation. The planning office was responsible for the structural engineering. Many voluntary helpers were also active within the framework of the National Building Organization (NAW) .

In April 1958 the MC Nordstern Stralsund was founded with 150 members. On May 4, 1958, the first race was held in front of 20,000 spectators.
