The Paul Hindemith School is an integrated comprehensive school in Frankfurt am Main - Gallus . It is named after the composer Paul Hindemith , who spent a large part of his youth in Gallus. It was created in 1985 by merging the Rebstöckerschule , a secondary school , the Hufnagelschule , a Realschule and the support level of the Günderrodeschule .

location

The Paul Hindemith School in Frankfurt is located in the Gallus district to the west of the city center , not far from the Galluswarte . The school grounds extend between Idsteiner Strasse in the north and Schwalbacher Strasse in the east. To the south and west of the school grounds there is a municipal kindergarten, further to the west is the Hellerhof settlement . The extensive area of the main freight station was located north of Idsteiner Strasse until 1996 . The western part of the Europaviertel has been under construction on the approximately 70 hectare urban development area since 2010 , and will be home to more than 10,000 people. Opposite the school is the park that was created in 2014 and named after Lotte Specht .

School profile

Grades 5 to 10 are taught here. In order to acquire the Abitur, a different upper level of the gymnasium has to be attended, as the Paul Hindemith School does not have its own upper level. However, the Neue Gymnasiale Oberstufe, NGO for short, which is located on Riedberg , works closely with the Paul Hindemith School. In grades 5 and 6, all subjects are taught as a class. From grade 7 onwards, there is an external performance differentiation in the subjects of mathematics and English in the form of basic and advanced courses. In the higher grades, further subjects then follow, e.g. B. German or the natural sciences physics and chemistry. The classes are supervised and taught by a permanent team of teachers for six school years. English is taught as the first foreign language from grade 5. French can be learned as a second foreign language from grade 7. The Paul Hindemith School is an all-day school, pupils are looked after from 7.30 a.m. in the central areas of the entrance hall and the school kiosk. Since the 2007/08 school year there has been a 60-minute rhythm at the Paul Hindemith School, one school hour corresponds to one hour. This should make everyday life and learning calmer, more level-headed and less hectic. There is a large additional range of voluntary and compulsory courses for all students, including elective courses (AG`s) with a focus on sports, art or music. The school social work SIS is available as an additional point of contact for students and teachers in the event of problems in everyday school life.

Buildings and history

The Paul Hindemith School consists of an old part of the building that was built before 1905 and an extension that was inaugurated when the school was founded in 1985. In 1905 the Hellerhofschule and the Rebstöckerschule opened as a dual citizenship school in what was then the westernmost district of Frankfurt in Schwalbacher Straße . Initially, boys and girls were to be taught separately there, and there were separate entrances for each school. In the middle part of the building there were two one-and-a-half-story gyms over three floors, accessible from both sides and still in use today.

During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged, but partially rebuilt with the help of the students. In 1985, when the extension was completed, the Paul Hindemith School was opened, in which the Rebstöckerschule , the support level of the Günderrodeschule and the Hufnagelschule , a secondary school previously located on Idsteiner Straße , were incorporated. The Hellerhof School, now a pure elementary school, relocated to the building of the former Hufnagelschule.

The main entrance on Idsteiner Straße and access to the school yard are located in the extension. The old building entrances are no longer used today, but still serve as an emergency exit. From the main entrance you stand directly in a large hall from which you have access to all parts of the building. The staircases / building parts B and C are from the original building, part A is in the new building. In addition to the canteen, there are the school kitchens and science rooms as well as a three-field hall for physical education, which is also used by sports clubs. The school library and the district library are also located here. This gives students wide media access.

After it was founded in 1985, the Paul Hindemith School was a cooperative comprehensive school , but was soon gradually converted into an integrated comprehensive school from the 1992/93 school year. Since the Paul Hindemith School cannot accommodate its own upper level due to lack of space, the Neue Gymnasiale Oberstufe , or NGO for short, was founded, which is to move next to the Paul Hindemith School in the foreseeable future. However, the construction project is delayed, so the NGO will remain at its provisional location on Riedberg until further notice .
