Paul-Philippe de Chaumont (* 1617 ; † March 24, 1697 in Paris ) was a librarian and bishop of Dax .

Life

De Chaumont came from an old aristocratic family who lived in Vexin ; his father was a royal librarian. About his mother he was u. a. related to Germain , Henri and Philippe Habert . This, but also his relationship to Chancellor Pierre Séguier, helped him pave the way to the Académie française . In the spring of 1654 de Chaumont was accepted into the academy as the successor to Jacques de Serisay (armchair 3). After his death in 1697, the historian Louis Cousin took his place.

Cousin later succeeded his father as royal librarian and held this office until 1671. That year he was called to be Bishop of Dax. He held this office until 1684.

Quote

The writer Jean Chapelain said of de Chaumont:

... qu'il ne manquait pas d'esprit, qu'il avait assez le gôut de sa langue et prêchait hardiment et facilement .
