Paul A. Bloomquist (born October 30, 1932 , † May 11, 1972 in Frankfurt am Main ) was an American lieutenant colonel and the first person to be killed in a bomb attack by the left-wing extremist terrorist organization Red Army Faction (RAF).

biography

Bloomquist was from Salt Lake City . He had commanded the 57th Med. Det., A helicopter ambulance unit of the United States Army , as a major in the Vietnam War in 1964/1965 and was honored in 1964 as "Army Aviator of the Year". In 1968/1969 he served again in Vietnam, this time in the 498th Medical Company. He has been awarded the Purple Heart three times, the Distinguished Flying Cross four times and the Air Medal 37 times . After his service in Vietnam, he was deployed as a battalion commander in the Federal Republic of Germany. The father of two was killed in a terrorist attack by the RAF's Petra Schelm command on May 11, 1972 on the US headquarters of the V Corps of the US Army in the IG Farben building in Frankfurt am Main with three bombs. Another 13 people were injured in the attack.

The attack was part of a series of terrorist attacks ("May offensive") . In the letter of confession reference was made to the Vietnam War.

In his honor, the headquarters of the 68th Medical Group was renamed "Camp Paul Bloomquist".
