Paul Abeles

Paul Wilhelm (William) Abeles (born January 17, 1897 in Mistelbach (Lower Austria) , † August 5, 1977 ) was an Austrian civil engineer.

Abeles studied from 1915 to 1928 at the University of Vienna and the Technical University of Vienna with a diploma as civil engineer in 1921 and a doctorate in 1928. He was a student of Friedrich Ignaz von Emperger . In 1921/22 he was an engineer in Recklinghausen and later a consulting engineer in Vienna. In 1939, as a Jew, fled to Great Britain from the National Socialists.

From 1941 to 1944 he was a technical advisor to British Railways and then until 1962 a senior civil engineer at British Railways. He was also a lecturer at the Brixton School of Building from 1949 to 1955 . 1952 to 1954 he was visiting professor at American colleges and from 1965 to 1967 he was visiting professor at Duke University and 1967/68 at the University of Kentucky . In 1962 he had a research fellowship at the University of Southampton . From 1969 he was a consultant at Jan Bobrowski and Partners in London.

In contrast to Eugène Freyssinet (and Gustave Magnel ) and like his teacher Emperger, he was a fan of only partially pre-stressed concrete. His teacher Emperger developed the idea in 1939. Abeles propagated it in Great Britain in 1941, which led to a long-standing dispute. Abeles used semi-prestressed concrete in adapting many railway bridges to electrification. Other civil engineers such as Ulrich Finsterwalder (1952) and later often Christian Menn also used the method, which in 1968 was also included in Swiss building regulations.

In 1978 he received the Freyssinet Medal . In 1972 he became an honorary member of the Concrete Society. In 1962 he received the Martin Korn Prize and in 1971 the Medaillon Award.
