from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Bach-y-Rita (born April 4, 1934 in New York , † November 20, 2006 ) was an American neurophysiologist and a pioneer in the study of neuroplasticity .

Life

His main focus was on rehabilitation after brain injuries . Based on the theoretical assumption of the neuroplasticity of the brain, he and colleagues presented ideas for a machine in 1969 that would translate the images from a camera into vibration signals and thus help the blind to find their way around. Such machines have been tested since the beginning of the 21st century and used in teaching with handicapped children and in the rehabilitation of war invalids and stroke victims.

In his honor, the University of Wisconsin Foundation donated the Paul Bach-y-Rita Lectureship Fund .
