Paul Berna

Paul Berna (actually Jean Sabran ; born February 21, 1908 in Hyères , † January 19, 1994 in Paris ) was a French author of children's and youth books and a screenwriter .

Life

Jean Sabran had six siblings, including older brother Guy , who later became an illustrator. He lost his father Paul Sabran at the beginning of the First World War . In the 1930s he worked as a newspaper journalist. In 1958 he married the author Jeanne Saint-Marcoux , with whom he had two sons.

Between 1957 and 1973 he wrote at least one book a year. In 1959 Berna received the prestigious Grand prix de littérature policière for his detective novel Deuil en rouge, and in 1963 his book Le cheval sans tête was made into a film by Walt Disney . The screenplay for The Horse without a Head was written by TEB Clarke; The main roles were played by Jean-Pierre Aumont and Herbert Lom .

Berna's books have been illustrated by Charles Keeping , Richard Kennedy and Brian Wildsmith, among others .

Many of his works, such as the Kommissar Sinet series, have also been translated into German. His children's and youth thrillers are mostly set in the suburbs of Paris in the post-war period and conjure up the close cohesion of gangs of children, who often come from poor backgrounds, against crooks and fraudsters.

Paul Berna devoted himself to other genres under other pseudonyms. He wrote books for adults as Bernard Deleuze , Paul Gerrard or Joël Audrenn . His numerous identities as a writer are matched by the contradicting statements about the year of his birth, which vary between 1908 and 1913.
