Paul Elliott, CBE (born March 18, 1964 in Lewisham ) is a retired English football player .

life and career

Elliott began his career with Charlton Athletic in the early 1980s. In 1983 he signed a contract with the then first division club Luton Town . After 66 games in Luton , he moved to Aston Villa in 1985 . After two years with the Villans, he went to Italy to play for two years at Pisa Calcio . In 1989 he returned to the UK . From 1989 to 1991 he played in Scotland for Celtic Glasgow and became the first Englishman to be Scottish Footballer of the Year (1991). In the summer of 1991 he went to Chelsea . In September 1992 he seriously injured his knee and had to end his career.

In 2003, Elliot was awarded the " Most Excellent Order of the British Empire " by Queen Elizabeth II . He received this award for his dedication to British youth players and his tireless efforts against racism. The Englishman was the first black man to play in the Old Firm ( Glasgow Derby). In 2013 he was awarded the next higher level of Commander .
