Paul Foucart

Paul François Foucart (born March 15, 1836 in Paris , † May 19, 1926 there ) was a French classical philologist and epigraphist .

Paul Foucart studied from 1855 at the École normal supérieure in Paris and was from 1859 at the École française d'Athènes in Athens , where he began the French excavations in Delphi . In 1868 he became a high school professor at the Lycée Charlemagne , from 1870 at the Lycée Bonaparte . In 1873 Foucart received his doctorate in Docteur ès lettres . From 1874 he taught epigraphy and Greek antiquity at the Collège de France , where he was appointed professor in 1877. Between the end of 1878 and 1890, Foucart headed the École française d'Athènes and after his return in 1890 was again professor of epigraphy and Greek antiquity at the Collège de France.

In 1878 Foucart became a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres , the following year a member of the Legion of Honor (from 1890 officer), in 1880 a corresponding member of the Bavarian and 1884 of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , and in 1893 a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg as well Honorary member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies . Foucart mainly researched the ancient Greek religious history.
