Paul Freiburghaus (born July 8, 1932 in Mühleberg ; † July 24, 2017 in Oberdiessbach ) was a Swiss painter , etcher , sculptor and teacher .

Life

Paul Freiburghaus grew up on the outskirts of Bern. He came into contact with painting for the first time through his grandfather's brother, Walter Enholtz . The great uncle took him to the Basel museums and showed him the works of Arnold Böcklin and other painters. Even then, he made the decision to become a painter. He had lessons with Fred Stauffer at the teachers' college in Hofwil-Bern . He then taught from 1952 to 1957 as a teacher at the Feutersoey Mountain School. In 1955 he married Verena Ryser. During a short stay in Paris he was a student at the Academy of André Lothe. Freiburghaus then studied at the University of Bern and at the Bern School of Applied Arts. He obtained the drawing teacher diploma in 1960. Until 1994 he taught at the teachers' seminar in Thun. In 1961 he built his studio house in Oberdiessbach , into which the Freiburghaus family moved with their three sons. In 1970 a daughter was born. In the same year Paul Freiburghaus became a member of the GSMBA .

Paul Freiburghaus had a deep friendship with the etcher and painter Fritz Eduard Pauli . After his death he published Pauli's graphic work. This work took a total of twelve years. After the death of the sculptor Paul Otto Roth, Freiburghaus co-founded the "Paul Roth Foundation". In 1986 there was an exhibition at the Steffisburg Art Collection with works by Paul Freiburghaus and Paul Roth.

From 1989 to 1994 Paul Freiburghaus headed the gravure printing studio at the School of Design in Bern. In 2007 the monograph Paul Freiburghaus by Fred Zaugg was published by Stämpfli-Verlag. In 2013, eleven of his works were shown at the 19th art exhibition in Trubschachen. Paul Freiburghaus died in July 2017, a few weeks after his last exhibition in the Heubühne gallery in Oberdiessbach.

Paul Freiburghaus is best known for his numerous etchings and paintings with colorful flower landscapes. In his own words, he always let himself be guided by “the experience of nature” when painting. As the color of light, yellow was an important color for him; many of his flower landscapes are kept in strong yellow. Typical are paintings such as Large Landscape (1984), the work Gelb IV shown in the catalog for the exhibition in Trubschachen 2013 or the cover image for the 2014 exhibition in the Bärensaal Oberdiessbach with the simple title Red . The trees in the work of Paul Freiburghaus are unmistakable, an example of this is the etching Liebesbaum from 1975.
