Walter Enholtz (born April 17, 1875 in Kreuzlingen , † December 11, 1961 in Basel ) was a Swiss painter .

Life

Walter Enholtz was born in Kreuzlingen as the son of a teacher. As a child, it was not easy for him at first, as there was a risk of blindness. This could be prevented by medical measures, but he was hard of hearing throughout his life and also had some difficulty speaking. After the family moved to Wettingen , he attended the district school in Baden. Around 1890 he went to the trade school in Basel , where he learned to paint with watercolors. This was followed by training at the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Geneva. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Frankfurt am Main , he received a scholarship from the Basel public art collection. He was able to travel to Rome, Florence and Sicily and further his education. On his travels he also discovered Ticino , to which he kept returning. After the marriage in 1926 a son and a daughter were born. After a short stay in Ticino, the family moved to Basel, where Walter Enholtz lived as a painter until his death. He particularly enjoyed going to the Basel Art Museum with his great-nephew Paul Freiburghaus to show him the works of Arnold Böcklin . The boy made the decision to later become a painter.
