Paul Gerhard de Haas

Paul Gerhard de Haas (born March 12, 1907 in Saarlouis ; † August 12, 1976 in Hanover ) was a German fruit growing scientist .

Life

Paul Gerhard de Haas studied horticulture in Berlin, graduated in 1934 as a qualified horticulturalist and received his doctorate in 1936 under Theodor Roemer at the University of Halle with the dissertation studies on the "clearing" of 27 year old pear and apple bush trees . Until 1945 he worked as head of fruit growing teaching and research institutes in Bad Köstritz (Thuringia) and in Pillnitz near Dresden. Since 1949 he was a full professor and director of the Institute for Fruit Growing and Tree Nursery at the TH Hannover . He worked here until his retirement in 1972.

The scope of de Haas research activities in the field of fruit growing was very broad. In long-term experiments, he examined, among other things, the diverse local influences of the location and the ecological aspects of the landscape in fruit trees. He is the author of several books on fruit growing . From 1959 to 1972 he was co-editor of the magazine “ kaufs-Obstbau ”and from 1961 to 1975 he was the editor-in-chief of the magazine“ Gartenbauwissenschaft ”. He was one of the founders of the German Society for Horticulture . From 1961 to 1971 he was president and since 1971 honorary member of this professional society.
