Paul Heinrich Trummer (born April 25, 1862 in Hamburg , † May 4, 1915 in Wandsbek ) was a German merchant and seal collector .

Life

Paul Heinrich Trummer was a child of the merchant of the same name from Prussia and his wife Wilhelmine, née Gebhardi from Mecklenburg. His parents had married in 1857. He had an older sister named Charlotte, born in 1859.

Paul Heinrich Trummer married Louise Martha Hell in 1891, with whom he had four children. A year after Louise Martha Hell died in 1897, he married Amalie Schönborn. This marriage produced five children.

Like his grandfather, Trummer worked as a businessman and co-owner of the export agency Vogler & Trummer . In addition to his job, he was self-taught in the natural sciences and history. His special interests were mineralogy, sphragistics and heraldry . He belonged to the Association for Hamburg History , became one of the leading members of the association and held the office of treasurer from 1902 until the end of his life as a board member. His collection of seals, which Trummer looked after, had led him to the club. He also collected tens of thousands of seals and associated scientific works on a self-financed basis. Trummer did not publish himself, but was happy to offer parts of his collection. He also worked at exhibitions in the Museum of Art and Crafts and maintained good contacts with many scientists, including the heraldist Otto Hupp .

In his will, Trummer recognized the city of Hamburg with his collection. He also offered the city the ability to acquire the associated collection of works and other things for a fee. This resulted in the Trummer collection , which is kept in the Hamburg State Archives. The collection includes 70,000 original or cast seals. This makes it the largest such collection in Germany.
