biography

Klemmer had been married since 1963 and had three children. During his activity as a professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum and as President of the Rhenish-Westphalian Institute, he lived in Sprockhövel.

In 1970, Paul Klemmer was appointed full professor to the chair for economics, especially economic policy, at the Ruhr University in Bochum, which he held until his retirement in 2000. In 1974 he became a full member of the Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning.

In 1979 Paul Klemmer founded the Ruhr Research Institute for Innovation and Structural Policy (RUFIS) and was also its chairman until 2003. His successor was Helmut Karl , who also took over the chair for economics, especially economic policy, after his retirement. He was then appointed in 1980 as a member of the Federal Government's Council of Experts on Environmental Issues, to which he was a member until 1987. From 1986 to 1991 he was chairman of the working group costs of environmental pollution / use of environmental protection at the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under the ministers Walter Wallmann and Klaus Töpfer . In 1987 he became a member of the Advisory Council for Regional Planning at the Federal Minister for Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development. In 1989 he was elected President of the Rhenish-Westphalian Institute for Economic Research (RWI) in Essen. He held this office until 2002. He was a member of the Advisory Board for Environmental and Economic Accounting at the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, the Enquête Commission on Protection of People and the Environment of the German Bundestag, Enquete Commission on Future Employment of the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Scientific Advisory Board on Global Change in the Federal Government (WBGU) .

From 1999 to 2001 he was also chairman of the working group of economic research institutes in Germany.

On August 20, 1987 Paul Klemmer received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for scientific work in the field of economic environmental and spatial research. This was probably due, among other things, to the fact that he helped reform the labor market statistics and thereby developed a new statistical method.

On October 25, 2002, he was made a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II . The award recognizes a "competent and trustworthy expert and advisor in the economic issues of the Ruhr area", it said at the time in the explanation.

Paul Klemmer died of cancer.
