Paul McGee (soccer player, 1954)

Paul McGee (born June 19, 1954 in Sligo ) is an Irish football coach and former football player .

Club career

McGees made his League Of Ireland debut at the age of 16 for Finn Harps in late 1970 , after four seasons he moved to the Rovers from his hometown in 1974 . Because of his good performance at the Rovers championship in 1977, he was signed to the English first division team Queens Park Rangers for the season . He made 39 league appearances with a total of seven goals up to the club's rise in 1978/79, played after the relegation of QPRs for one year each with the second division FC Burnley and Preston North End before he returned to his native Ireland at the age of 30. Initially relatively unsuccessful at his hometown club Sligo Rovers, after moving to Galway United , success returned with 30 competitive goals in one season.

In 1987 McGee went abroad for a second time, this time to the Netherlands for the honorary divisionist HFC Haarlem , for whom he played another three years. After returning to Ireland at the age of 36, he played another year for Galway United , the following season he was under contract with Finn Harps , but had to end his career after a car accident after a few appearances for the Harps.

National team

McGee was 10 times youth and easy junior international for Ireland before he was called to the A-selection of his home country in 1978 . In total, he played 15 times for Ireland between 1978 and 1980 and scored 4 goals.

After the active time

After playing, McGee worked as a scout for Crystal Palace and the Queens Park Rangers, as well as a football journalist for Irish newspapers. Most recently, he coached the U-21 team Devon Celtic , which he led to the Irish U-21 Championship, before he took over the coaching position at the newly founded Irish second division Limerick 37 in February 2007 , but was dismissed after the end of the 2007 season. Between January and August 2008 he was co-trainer at Cork City . In 2010 he worked for the Irish television station RTÉ in reporting on the League of Ireland .
