Paul McKenzie (* 1959 in Glasgow ) is the singer of the Canadian-Scottish folk-punk band The Real McKenzies .

Life

McKenzie was born in Scotland. In the 1960s the family moved to Dublin. In 1968 it was enough for his father in Ireland and he emigrated with his family to Canada. In 1976/1977 he started playing punk music there. In 1992 he founded the band The Real McKenzies in the western Canadian city of Vancouver .

The singer has lived in Vancouver , British Columbia since 1971 . As early as 1972, he left home for a while to attend various punk concerts in Detroit . Public attentions are often aroused by certain alcohol antics of the singer. In the punk scene, the following statement is already legendary: “When I was a little boy, my parents and grandparents put me in a kilt and made me sing and dance to traditional Scottish music. Starting a Scottish punk band was my way of revenge! ”.

With Scottish immigrants in North America, the mix of punk and folklore is often seen as a "blight of folk culture". In an interview published on thepunksite.com in 2005, McKenzie made it clear that, in his opinion, there would be no future for Scottish folk music without this style of music.
