Paul Neugebauer
Paul Neugebauer (born September 22, 1848 in Breslau ; † December 8, 1918 there ) was a German educator and astronomer .
From 1869 Neugebauer attended the University of Breslau and studied mathematics and astronomy. In 1872 he became an assistant at the Breslauer Sternwarte, in 1874 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the comet of 1684. In 1876 Neugebauer entered the school service after the senior teacher examination, so that he could not pursue astronomy as a main occupation. However, his sponsor Galle made him acquainted with Robert Luther in Düsseldorf, who left Neugebauer to do the mathematical processing of his numerous newly discovered small planets . In 1885 this resulted in contact with the Astronomical Computing Institute in Berlin.
For more than thirty years, Neugebauer worked for the Rechen-Institut in his spare time, mainly calculating minor planet ephemeris for the Berlin Astronomical Yearbook , thereby relieving the Rechen-Institut considerably. Particularly extensive calculations also required the determination of the disturbances of Brooks' comet (1889 V).
One of Paul Neugebauer's two sons, Paul Viktor Neugebauer , chose astronomy as his profession and worked at the computing institute from 1901.
