Paul Preston CBE (born July 21, 1946 in Liverpool ) is a British historian who is best known for his publications on Spanish history in the 20th century.

Life

Paul Preston studied at Oriel College , Oxford and the University of Reading . After receiving his doctorate, he taught as a lecturer in Reading, then at Queen Mary College in London. In 1991 he was appointed professor of international history at the London School of Economics .

Preston has published numerous papers on Spanish history, particularly the Spanish Civil War, in English, Spanish and Catalan. His biographies of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco , the King Juan Carlos I and the communist leader Santiago Carrillo achieved high editions.
