Paul Robert (Russian Поль Робер, * 1867 in Friborg ; † 1934 ibid) was a Swiss actor and cartoonist who lived and worked in St. Petersburg from 1885 to 1918 .

After the death of his father, he came to St. Petersburg in 1885 at the age of 18. He worked there as a grocer and home teacher for French. In addition, he was self-taught with painting.

Soon he joined an ensemble of French actors and performed on the stage of the Imperial Mikhailovsky Theater . He spent the theater holidays in Paris , where he attended the Académie Julian . He took part in exhibitions of the St. Petersburg Artists Society. The paintings were put up for sale, several works were acquired by Empress Maria Fjodorovna for her personal collection.

Robert worked for the St. Petersburg illustrated magazines - the satirical magazine "Schut" (1897–1901) and the Peterburgskaya Gazeta (1902–1917), where he published caricatures of the Petersburg elite. a. the dancers Anna Pavlova and Olga Preobrajenska , the singer Fyodor Chaliapin , director Vsevolod Meyerhold , the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov , Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov and César Cui , the painter Ilya Repin and Konstantin Makovsky , of the writer Maxim Gorky . He also released two cartoon albums.

He married a Swiss woman living in St. Petersburg who ran a pastry shop at 26 Bolschaja Morskaja Strasse in the 1900s. The couple had a son.

Robert performed at the Mikhailovsky Theater for more than 30 years, and in early 1917 he received a retirement pension.

After the October Revolution he lost his pension. Robert did not leave the theater, on March 3, 1918 he took part in the last performance of the French ensemble. After the theater was closed, he returned to Switzerland. He taught diction and made a living selling paintings and caricatures. He died in Friborg in 1934.
