Paul Sarkisian

Paul Sarkisian (* 1928 in Chicago , Illinois , USA ; has lived in Santa Fe , New Mexico since 1972 ) is an American contemporary painter and an important exponent of photorealism .

life and work

Paul Sarkisian studied at the Art Institute of Chicago , the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and in Mexico City .

Sarkisian is best known for his monumental photorealistic paintings. However, in his artistic development he made several stylistic changes, from mystical fetish art in the 1970s to an almost contradicting painterly expression, a post- minimalist approach in his late work. He also worked with collages made from different materials, shapes and colors.

Paul Sarkisian took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the pioneering Realism department with a huge picture over 4 meters high and 8 meters long . To this day he has exhibitions in major museums and galleries around the world.

Locations of an extensive list of solo exhibitions include the ARCO Center for Visual Arts in Los Angeles; the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston , Houston , Texas ; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; the Santa Barbara Museum of Art , the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and in 2005 at SITE Santa Fe.
