Paula Scher (born October 6, 1948 in Washington, DC ) is an American graphic designer , painter and art educator . She has been the first female director of the New York office of design consultancy Pentagram since 1991 .

Life

Scher graduated from the Tyler School of Art in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania , and received his Bachelor of Arts in 1970. She moved to New York City and took her first job as a layout artist for the Random Houses children's book division. From 1972, she worked for CBS Rekords for eight years, creating legendary album cover designs. In 1984 she co-founded Koppel & Scher with designer and colleague Tyler Koppel. In 1991, she became Pentagram's first director in New York. In addition, she taught at the School of Visual Arts for over two decades and at times at Yale University , the Tyler School of Arts and the Cooper Union. Her work is on display at New York's MoMA, the Museum of Design, and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. She has designed for the Public Theater, MoMA , the New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera , among others . For Microsoft , she designed a new logo for Windows 8 and Office 2010.
