The Pauraque ( Nyctidromus albicollis ) is a bird from the family of Nightjars (Caprimulgidae).

features

The Pauraque, 22 to 28 centimeters long, has a long tail and wide, rounded wings . The plumage is either gray-brown or piebald reddish-brown. The light brown eye ring and facial stripes contrast with the reddish face. The male has a white band on the wing tip and white outer feathers on the tail. In the female these features are far less pronounced. The bird's call is a “pure-like”.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the Pauraque extends from south Texas and Mexico south to Bolivia and north Argentina . It lives on the edge of the forest, in secondary forests and loose shrubbery and nests in more open terrain.

behavior

During the day, the Pauraque rests on the ground or, camouflaged as nightjar, sits lengthways on a low branch. At night he hunts for beetles , moths and fireflies in deep patrol flight or from a seat . The Pauraque stays on the ground more than any other nightjar; if he is disturbed, he sometimes runs away rather than flies away. He often rests on the street at night.
