Pavel Hobza (born October 21, 1946 in Přerov ) is a Czech theoretical chemist ( quantum chemistry , physical chemistry ).

Life

Hobza studied chemistry at the Technical University in Prague and received his doctorate from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague. From 1973 to 1986 he was at the Institute for Hygiene and Epidemiology in Prague. 1991 to 2003 was at the Heyrovsky Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and headed the Research Center for Complex Molecular Systems and Biomolecules from 2000 to 2011. Since 2002 he has been Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Charles University in Prague and since 2003 has been head of the Molecular Modeling Department at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. Since 2012 he has headed the Center of Excellence for the Control of Structure and Function of Biomolecules at the Molecular Level. Since 2005 he has also been professor of physical chemistry at the Palacký University in Olomouc .

In 1979 and 1982 he was a post-doctoral student at the University of Montreal and a visiting professor in 1984 and 1986. He was also in the 1980s several times at the University of Erlangen and the Technical University of Munich (1990/91 as visiting professor).

He is particularly concerned with non-covalent bonds (such as van der Waals forces ) with applications to biosystems, including their behavior in aqueous solutions (molecular dynamics).

In 2017 he received the Schrödinger Medal . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry .
