Colombe Pavilion
The Colombe Pavilion in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt , a French commune in the Val-d'Oise department in the Île-de-France region , was built around 1770. Since 1994 the building on rue Edith-Wharton with the park and its outbuildings has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .
history
The building, similar to a castle , was built for Jean-André Vassal, receveur des Finances , according to the plans of the architect François-Joseph Bélanger (1744-1818). Vassal gave it to his mistress Marie-Catherine Colombe (1751-1830), after whom it was named. She was an actress at the Comédie-Italienne in Paris. The splendid interior was given to the building by the painters Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Hubert Robert . The sculptures were created by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and Jean-Antoine Houdon .
The American writer Edith Wharton lived in this house from 1919 until her death in 1937. The street on which the Colombe Pavilion is located was named after her.
