Paul von Plehve ( Павел Адамович фон Плеве , Pavel Plehve * May 30 jul. / June 11, 1850 greg. , † March 28 jul. / April 10, 1916 greg. In Moscow ) was a Russian officer last cavalry general in the First world war .

Life

Von Plehwe was the son of a noble family of German origin. After attending secondary school in Warsaw , he joined the Imperial Russian Army in 1868 , graduated from the Nikolajewski Cavalry School as a cornet in 1870 and was accepted into the Life Guard Uhlan Regiment. In 1877 he completed training at the General Staff Academy and then took on as a staff captain in the headquarters of the XIII. Army Corps participated in the Russo-Ottoman War . From 1878 to 1879 he was on the staff of the occupation troops and in the War Ministry of the Principality of Bulgaria . He then took over a squadron of the Life Guard Cuirassier Regiment. In 1882 he was promoted to colonel while serving in the General Staff and from 1884 to 1890 he held a leading position at the General Staff Academy. After a period in the troop service as commander of the 12th Dragoons Regiment in Mariupol and promotion to major general , he became quartermaster general of the Vilna military district in 1893 and head of the Nikolayevsky cavalry school in 1895. In 1899 he took over the 2nd Cavalry Division.

Von Plehwe was a participant in the Russo-Japanese War , but after the outbreak of unrest in Poland was appointed commander of the Warsaw Fortress and in the same year received command of the XVI. Army Corps. In 1906 he became deputy commander in the Vilnius military district and was promoted to general of the cavalry the following year. As such, in 1909 he was appointed commander of the Moscow Military District. During the mobilization for the First World War, he received command of the 5th Army , with which he took part in the Battle of Galicia , the Battle of the Vistula and the Battle of Łódź . In January 1915, the 12th Army was formed under his leadership and took part in the winter battle in Mazury . During the Narew offensive in July 1915, his army, which was concentrated in the Lomsha area , was forced to retreat eastwards . From December 1915, Plehwe briefly led the northern front before he had to give up his post in February 1916 for health reasons. He was then appointed a member of the State Council shortly before his death .
