Pavel Eduardowitsch Schabalin

Pawel Eduardowitsch Schabalin ( Russian Павел Эдуардович Шабалин ; born January 20, 1961 in Kirow ) is a Russian mountaineer .

Shabalin is best known for its sometimes spectacular routes on Ak-su (5217 meters) and other peaks in the Pamir . He is multiple Russian champion in classic style climbing.

In 2004, together with Ilja Tuchwatullin and Andrej Mariew, he opened a new route on the north face of Mount Everest , which can be viewed as a Direttissima . In 2007 he was a member of the Russian west face expedition to K2 , which climbed the Direttissima on this flank for the first time. In the same year he and Ilya Tuchwatullin first climbed the north face of Khan Tengri in alpine style .
