Paxton is a village in the southeast of the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders or in the traditional county of Berwickshire . It is around nine kilometers west of Berwick-upon-Tweed in England and nine kilometers south of Eyemouth near the Scottish-English border. Whiteadder Water runs to the west and flows into the Tweed a short distance downstream .
history
A church building at the site was mentioned as early as the 12th century. However, today's Paxton Church dates from 1908.
Paxton developed with the construction of Paxton House in the mid-18th century. Patrick Home commissioned the Palladian mansion . Today an art museum is housed there, which looks after the National Galleries of Scotland .
In 1961 Paxton had 187 inhabitants.
traffic
The B6460 is Paxton's main thoroughfare. In the east, the A1 , which connects London with Edinburgh , can be reached within a few kilometers . The A6105 ( Earlston - Berwick-upon-Tweed) runs to the north . In 1820 a crossing of the Tweed between Scotland and England was created south of Paxton with the Union Bridge . It is the oldest road bridge in Scotland that was worked as a suspension bridge . Today it is of little infrastructural importance.
