Peña de las Cucharas

Peña de las Cucharas is one of the most important archaeological excavation sites on the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote . The "casa honda", a semi-underground structure made of dry stone walls , assigned to the earlier settlement of Fiquinineo , had been inhabited since the 13th century at the latest, before the European conquest, and was only abandoned in the 19th century.

The excavations, which have been carried out annually since 2009, have provided valuable information about the settlement history of Lanzarote. The building, built by the island's indigenous people, the Majos , was later inhabited by Berbers who had been brought to the island as work slaves from North Africa. Over the centuries of use, there were several modifications until a storm destroyed Fiquinineo in the early 19th century and covered it with sand.

In addition to small items from medieval and recent times such as coins , thimbles , pins , lamps and a cannonball , the excavation campaigns also unearthed ceramic remains , spearheads and stone tools of the Majos. Some of it is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in Arrecife , where the excavation site can also be explored using a VR simulation .
