Pearl Abraham

Pearl Abraham (born October 16, 1960 in Jerusalem , Israel ) is an American author and university professor .

Life

Abraham grew up as the third of nine children in a Hasidic family. She moved to New York City with her family when she was five . After moving to Israel and back to New York several times, she has lived in this city since the age of 12. Their schooling was either in Yiddish or in English , depending on where they lived .

Abraham graduated from Hunter College in Manhattan and earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in creative writing from New York University . She then taught at her alma mater , Sarah Lawrence College and the University of Houston . Today (2013) she is Assistant Professor of the English Language at Western New England University and lives alternately in Springfield and New York City.

Abraham has published four novels so far and was the editor of an anthology in Dutch with the title: Een sterke vrouw: Jewish Heroines in Literature . Her short stories and essays have appeared in various magazines.

Prizes and awards

  • Abraham's novels were on bestseller lists and on nomination lists for several literary awards.
  • 1995: Best Book of 1995 by Library Journal for The Romance Reader .
  • 2006: Shamus Award for the best short story about a private detective for Hassidic Noir .
