from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pednelissos (Greek Πεδνηλισσός; also Petnelissos ) was an ancient city in the Pisidia region of Asia Minor in today's southwestern Turkey. The ruins of the city are located at today's Kozan , about 75 km northeast of Antalya .

Historical sources mention that Pednelissus was born around 218 BC. Was besieged by the Selgern . There are coins minted by the city from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. In late antiquity the city was the seat of a bishopric; the diocese continues as the titular diocese of Petnelissus (temporarily Pednelissus ) of the Roman Catholic Church.

The city near Kozan lay on the western slope of a foothill of the Taurus Mountains . Extensive remains of it have been preserved, including large parts of the Hellenistic city wall with gate towers, the agora with columned halls and an early Christian basilica , a temple and thermal baths as well as other churches built on extensive substructures . Outside the city wall were a sanctuary of Apollo and two necropolises . About twenty inscriptions have been found there, none of which mention the city's name.

Pednelissos has been researched in a survey project headed by Hartwin Brandt since 2001 .
