As a recognized expert in this area, he organized several trips to the Turkish Aegean Sea as part of a summer academy at his university . In addition to numerous other writings and contributions, he wrote a considerable part of the articles on classical ancient sites in what is now Turkey in the form of Richard Stillwell et al. published Princeton Encyclopedia of Classical Sites .

As a specialist in ancient Turkey, Bean was valued by colleagues and students alike. He was athletic and passionate about badminton and tennis . In his youth he even made it to the Wimbledon Championships .

Bean was married twice: his first marriage lasted six years and ended in divorce. He met his second wife while teaching in Turkey and married her in Istanbul.
