Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra (born March 12, 1638 in Granada , † 1689 ibid) was a painter of the Spanish Baroque .
Life
Alonso Cano was one of Bocanegra's teachers . The style of the two painters is quite similar, but with Bocanegra the colors are often more vivid; Well known during his lifetime, he is remembered today as one of the most typical representatives of the Granada school of painting.
His first mature works included the paintings of the Iglesia de los Santos Justo y Pastor in Granada, executed in 1670. As the official painter of Granada Cathedral, his work is largely determined by religious motifs. Bocanegra was considered proud and arrogant; he is said to have liked to describe himself as the best Spanish painter of his time. In 1676 he moved to Madrid , where he was appointed royal painter thanks to the protection of various high-ranking feudal princes. It is said that he left Madrid because of an argument with another painter.
