Pedro Alonso (* 1957 in Madrid ) is a Spanish physician and malaria - researchers , the 1996, the Manhiça Health Research Center in Mozambique has established and now director of the WHO 's Global Malaria Program in Geneva.

Professional life

In 1996, Alonso founded the Centro de Investigaçao em Saúde de Manhiça (CISM - Manhiça Health Research Center) in Mozambique. As director he was responsible for the establishment and development of the research and training center and expanded it into one of the leading institutes in malaria research. He was then Director of the Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) in Barcelona, ​​Head of the Medical Department for International Health and Tropical Medicine at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona and Professor at the University of Barcelona. Since 2014 he has been director of the WHO Global Malaria Program.

Alonso's research has been published in the medical journals The Lancet , the Journal of Infectious Diseases, and the Journal for Tropical Medicine and International Health . Alonso was a member of a number of international expert groups, including a. as chairman of the Malaria Vaccination Expert Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO).
