Pedro Opazo

Pedro Opazo Letelier (born July 20, 1876 in Talca, † April 9, 1957 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean politician . From June 26 to 27, 1931, he served as president of his country for one day.

Opazo studied medicine at the Universidad de Chile . He belonged to the Liberal Democratic Party. In 1920 he was appointed Minister of War and Infrastructure for half a year by the outgoing President Juan Luis Sanfuentes . From 1921 he represented the Talca district first in the House of Representatives, then from 1924 in the Senate.

In 1930 he was elected President of the Senate. In this capacity he slipped after the resignation of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo and his entire cabinet in accordance with the constitution on July 26, 1931 as acting Vice-President to the head of state of Chile. Opazo used this day to appoint a new cabinet, as its interior minister he selected Juan Esteban Montero , to whom he immediately made the office of vice-president. Overall, Opazo's tenure as head of state lasted less than 24 hours.

With the handover of official business to Montero, Opazo worked again as a senator; he was re-elected in the 1932 elections and remained in the office of Senate President until May 23, 1944.
