description

Between 1961 and 1963, around 120 copies of the vehicles with bodies made of GRP were made . According to various sources, around 40 vehicles have survived to this day. The company reported the following measurements: 4 feet + 4 inches (1321 mm) long, 3 feet 3 inches (991 mm) wide, and 3 feet + 10 inches (1168 mm) high. To this day, it is considered the smallest production car in the world. The new price was £ 199 (which corresponds to a purchasing power of £ 4,460 today).

Technical specifications

The three-wheeled vehicle has chain rear-wheel drive, a three-speed gearbox with no reverse gear, wishbones in the front, a swing arm in the rear, coil springs and cable-operated brakes. The tank holds about 8 liters of 1:25 mixture. The maximum speed is given as around 70 km / h.

Replicas

The Peel Engineering Limited and Bambycars make replicas of other dimensions and other engines. There are some changes compared to the first model from 1961: In some cases, the handle on the rear of the car was omitted and the drive has a reverse gear. The EU-wide road approval as a light vehicle limits its maximum speed to 45 km / h.

Peel Engineering P50 (2008)

The P50 has been operated by Peel Engineering Ltd. since 2008 . Released in Sidcup with a 45 cc gasoline four-stroke engine . The version with an electric motor is powered by four 12-volt batteries.

Bamby P50 (2011)

In Gainsborough , the company founded in 2011 Bambycars his version Bamby P50 ago. The vehicle has a four-stroke engine with a capacity of 50 cm³ and an output of 3.3 HP. It is a so-called horizontal motor (Honda system) with centrifugal clutch and automatic transmission with integrated reverse gear.,

Others

In the tenth season episode 3 of Top Gear , Jeremy Clarkson tested the suitability for everyday use of the highly smoking Peel P50. Among other things, he drove it to the BBC's broadcasting center, crossed the corridors of an open-plan office, used the elevator and, still sitting at the wheel of the car, attended a (staged) employee seminar on the subject of "Environmentally conscious behavior in the BBC's everyday work".
