history

From left: Gelderhaus, level house, dam guard house.

The Rhine level measurement has existed in Worms since 1819. The Worms gauge house, a tower-like round building with a conical roof, has stood directly on the Rhine since the late 1920s. It is encompassed on both sides by two other, small buildings that were erected in 1855 when the ship bridge was built over the Rhine, which is a good 70 years older than the gauge house. To the left of the gauge house is the so-called Gelderhaus, which served as the payment point for the bridge toll on the ship's bridge. To the right of the level house is the so-called dam guard house for the dam guard. The basis for this was a statutory ordinance of the Grand Ducal Hessian government, which not only issued the ordinance to guard the Rhine embankments, but also developed the plans for the dam guard house.
