Pelargonium tetragonum is a plant of the genus Pelargonium ( Pelargonium ) within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae). It is based in South Africa.

Vegetative characteristics
Pelargonium tetragonum grows as a heavily branched climbing shrub. The blunt 3 to 4-edged, succulent shoots are relatively slender and brittle and can be up to 2 meters long. The internodes are comparatively long. The semi-succulent leaves are bare to shaggy and hairy and have occasional glandular hairs . The heart to kidney-shaped leaf blade is divided into 5 hand-shaped parts and is often provided with zonal markings. The petiole is significantly longer than the blade.
Generative characteristics
The unbranched inflorescence usually contains 2 flowers. The very short flower stalk is much shorter than the flower cup . The 4 to less often 5 petals are cream-colored to pink in color and have wine-red markings. The upper two are made relatively large and twice as long as the two lower ones. There are seven fertile stamens .
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
Occurrence
The distribution area of Pelargonium tetragonum is in the South African provinces of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape .
Systematics
It was first described as Geranium tetragonum in 1781 by Carl von Linné . Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle placed the species in 1789 in the genus Pelargonium, which he created .
Synonyms for Pelargonium tetragonum (Lf) L'Hér. are Jenkinsonia tetragona (Lf) Sweet , Chorisma tetragona (Lf) Ecklon & Zeyer and Chorisma flavescens Ecklon & Zeyer .
The species belongs to the Chorisma DC section . It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.
