Fur refiner

The fur finisher or smoker finisher , Austrian rough goods finisher, is a state-recognized training occupation in Germany according to the Vocational Training Act .

Duration of training and structure

The training period to become a fur finisher is usually three years. The training takes place at the training company and vocational school . It is a mono job .

Work areas

Fur refiners process tobacco products , they process raw hides into a raw material that is processed into fur by furriers . They work in tobacco goods dressing shops (fur tanneries ) and tobacco goods processing companies. In the dressing shop they remove the flesh from the hides, mill them , clean them and bake them. The skins are then dried and degreased. In the finishing process, the skins are dyed, sheared or otherwise changed in their properties.

Fur finishers are trained in federal specialist classes at the Kerschenstein School in Reutlingen, in cooperation with the Leather Institute Gerberschule Reutlingen, the only training facility in the Federal Republic of Germany.
