Pemmo (Friuli)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pemmo was from 706 to 739 dux (Duke) of the Lombard Duchy of Friuli .

Life

Pemmo was a son of Billo from Bellunum ( Belluno ) who had emigrated to Forum Julii ( Cividale ) because of an uprising . Pemmo was married to Ratperga with whom he had the sons Ratchi , Ratchait and Aistulf .

As the successor of the deposed Corvolus, Pemmo became around 706 dux of Friuli. In his household he raised the orphans of the Longobards who died in the last war against the Slovaks with his own sons.

When the Slavs invaded Lauriana , Pemmo marched them with his now grown-up pupils. The Slavs suffered heavy losses, while Pemmo (allegedly) only lost one man before a peace treaty was signed.

When the Patriarch Calixtus of Aquileia drove the exiled Bishop Amator of Julia Carnica from Forum Julii , Pemmo intervened and took the Patriarch Calixtus prisoner. King Liutprand then deposited Pemmo and handed the ducat to his son Ratchis around 739. Pemmo wanted to flee to the Slavs with his followers, but Ratchis was able to persuade the king to reconcile. Pemmo and his sons Ratchait and Aistulf were pardoned, the other offenders were imprisoned.

Pemmo's further life is not recorded.

Ratchis donated an altar in honor of his father Pemmo. The inscription tells of the “famous and noble Pemmo” who rebuilt the destroyed St. John's Church and enriched it with many gifts.
