Shuttle bus
As Pendelbus- or shuttle operation is referred to often temporary establishment of public bus services in public or private sector sponsorship, for example, during a festival whose various venues too far apart to make this easily within walking distance.

Examples are inter-city events such as the annual Extraschicht (“Long Night of Industrial Culture”) in the Ruhr area as well as church days or film festivals with venues scattered all over the city. In the case of the short film festival OpenEyes in Marburg , this enables the inclusion of the atmospherically desirable, natural venue in the Amöneburg Castle ruins in addition to the main building of the “Café Trauma” cultural center.
Airport transfers using shuttle buses now occupy a separate transport segment. This concept has established itself almost everywhere in Germany as well as in holiday destinations such as Mallorca (as a permanent offer). During international trade fairs , a dedicated trade fair shuttle service is often installed between airports and the exhibition grounds, for example in Munich and Düsseldorf .
Another example are park-and-ride systems , which set up shuttle buses between the city center and large parking lots outside the city in order to relieve the city center from excessive individual traffic.
Shuttle buses can also be used as part of a regular line, for example to reach certain locations if there are not enough buffer times on the main route, which could jeopardize transfer options. One example is line 336R (OVAG) Wipperfürth-Ohl - Kierspe-Rönsahl (as a feeder for line 336 Gummersbach - Remscheid-Lennep).
Special cases and similar offers
The discobus is a special case . In order to enable visitors to reach the discotheque or other large evening events inexpensively and without problems, a so-called “discobus” has already been launched in many cities and especially in rural areas. Usually it commutes all night between the city center and the venue or brings visitors from different locations to a central event at set times. The concept is now a well-accepted alternative for many young people. In this context, however, problems for the bus companies are increased vandalism and rioting drunkards, who often require a security service to travel with them.
Similar offers are direct or express buses . However, these also serve longer, sometimes regional connections, for example between larger cities. The operating concepts and names are quite different. As a special feature of shuttle buses, commuting back and forth with a regular timetable , short distances and the mostly time-limited offers can be seen, permanent offers tend to have other names. The shuttle bus has established itself for airport or trade fair connections .
