Peninsular Gas Utilization

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Peninsular Gas Utilization (PGU) is the longest pipeline network in Malaysia with 2,500 kilometers of pipelines . Except for the Serdang - Port Dickson - Melakka section, which is managed as a multi-product pipeline , it is a pure natural gas pipeline.

The 1,700 kilometer long main pipeline connects the offshore natural gas fields and the Kerteh refinery in Terengganu with other regions of the Malaysia peninsula. PGU is owned by the operating company Petronas Gas Berhad on , a 100% subsidiary of Petronas .

history

The Peninsular Gas Utilization project goes back to a study from 1981, which deals with the overall concept for supplying Malaysia with natural gas.

Construction of the peninsular gas utilization began in 1984. The main work was completed in 1993, today the PGU project comprises a total line length of 2,500 km - divided into the actual PGU pipeline, supply lines and secondary lines. The overall system also includes six gas processing plants for the separation of ethane, propane, butane and condensate from natural gas with a total capacity of 57 million standard cubic meters per day.

The construction of the pipeline network comprised four construction phases:

  • Phase 1: Tok Arun - Kerteh
  • Phase 2:
    • Section 1: Kerteh - Gibg - Segamat
    • Section 2: Segamat - Johor Bahru - Pasir Gudang
    • Section 3: Segamat - Pedas - Serdang
  • Phase 3: Serdang-Gurun-Kangar
  • Phase 4 (multi-products): Serdang - Port Dickson - Melakka

The Phase 1 - also called PGU I - was completed already 1984th It comprised gas processing in Kerteh (GPP 1) with a capacity of 7 million standard cubic meters per day, the export terminal, a 32-kilometer pipeline between GPP and the terminal, secondary lines to power plants and industrial areas on the east coast of Malaysia and a gas supply network for the city of Kerteh.

Phase 2 (PGU II) was completed in 1991. Three additional gas processing plants ( Gas Processing Plant GPP 2, GPP 3 and GPP 4) with a capacity of 7 million standard cubic meters each and the 685 kilometer main pipeline to the western and southern regions of the Malaysia Peninsula as far as Singapore were added.

The final phase 3 (PGU III) has been in operation since 1998. The pipeline was extended by 450 kilometers along the west coast to the Malaysian-Thai border. There were also two new gas processing plants GPP 5 and GPP 6, each with a capacity of 14 million standard cubic meters.

In the further course the PGU system was expanded by the projects Loop 1 and Loop 2 , which serve the security of supply of the Klang Valley industrial area. The throughput between Kertih and Segamat was increased in 1999 by laying a 265-kilometer parallel "Loop 1" line to the existing pipeline. Another 226 kilometers of "Loop 2" were moved from Segamat to Meru in 2000.

The multi-product pipeline from Serdang to Port Dickson and Melakka, which was built as phase 4 , can also produce other gases in addition to natural gas.

Company facilities

The pipeline is equipped with a sensor system for monitoring gas leaks. The control rooms for the operation and monitoring of the pipeline are located in Pedas , Negeri Sembilan , Gibg , Pahang , Segamat and Johor .

Connection to other pipelines

Peninsular Gas Utilization is connected to the Trans Thailand-Malaysia Pipeline (TTM) in the north of the country.
