Peniocereus cuixmalensis is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Peniocereus cuixmalensis does not grow or has mostly upright shoots just above the ground with few branches . The carrot-like, occasionally forked roots are 25 to 35 centimeters long. The elongated, square, light green shoots are whitish spotted. They are 80 to 220 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. There are four corrugated ribs . The thick, strong thorns are thickened at their base. They are initially reddish and later become horn-colored. The single central spine is 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. The six to seven radiating radial spines have a length of 8 to 20 millimeters.

The funnel-shaped, fragrant, white flowers open at night. They are 9 to 11 inches long. The egg-shaped fruits are 5 to 6 centimeters long and have a diameter of 3.5 to 4 centimeters. They contain a red, juicy pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus cuixmalensis is common in the Mexican states of Jalisco , Colima , Guerrero and Michoacán . The first description was in 1973 by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
